Air Before Storage
After wearing, place the saree in a clean shaded area with good airflow. This allows body moisture and light fragrance to dissipate. Do not expose rich dyes to harsh sun for long periods, and never fold a damp saree into storage. Remove safety pins carefully and check the hem, pleats and pallu for marks.
Clean According to the Exact Product
Silk, dyes, jari and embellishment can react differently, so follow the care instructions supplied with the saree. Professional dry cleaning is commonly recommended for richly woven or ornamented silk. Tell the cleaner about stains and metallic details. Avoid experimenting with strong detergents, stain removers or home washing on a valuable piece.
Use Breathable Storage
Wrap the saree in clean cotton or muslin. Avoid long-term sealed plastic storage because trapped moisture can encourage odour or damage. Keep the bundle in a dry, dark cupboard away from wall dampness. Natural repellents should not touch the fabric directly, and strongly scented products can transfer odour or oil.
Refold Periodically
Heavy borders and pallus can stress the same fold lines when a saree remains untouched. Every few months, open it in a clean area, inspect it and refold along different lines. Place soft tissue or cotton between dense jari sections to reduce rubbing. Avoid hanging heavy silk for long periods because the weight can distort it.
Iron with Caution
Check the product instructions first. When ironing is allowed, use suitable low heat and a clean protective cloth, preferably from the reverse side. Do not place a hot iron directly on raised jari, embroidery or delicate finishes. Steam can create water spots on some silks, so use it only when the care guidance supports it.
Handle Jewellery and Cosmetics Carefully
Rings, bangles, watch straps and rough clutches can catch woven threads. Apply perfume, deodorant and makeup before draping and allow products to dry. Keep pins away from motifs where possible. Small handling habits make a significant difference to how a silk saree ages.
